Photographer of the Week
Photo by Barbara Davidson from Corcoran State Prison series on her website. Brent Shelton, 41, was sentenced to life for armed robbery and placed in the segregated housing unit (SHU) due to allegations of affiliation with the Mexican Mafia.
Barbara Davidson is a photojournalist who covers major issues in the U.S, including living environments in other countries, gang violence, and gun violence in Los Angeles. She graduated from Concordia University with a bachelor's degree in news and documentary film. She worked for the Washington Times, Dallas Morning News, and, most recently, the Los Angeles Times she left in 2017.
Davidson mostly works with black and white photography and coverage on gun violence. She also focused on documenting humanitarian crises from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Congo, SOuthern Sudan, Isreal, and Gaza.
Davidson won two Pulitzer Prizes, one in 2006 for her coverage on Hurricane Katrina, and the other in 2011 for her coverage on Los Angeles gang violence. She was also awarded the Photographer of the Year International award in 2008, then a News and Documentary Emmy in 2011. She was then awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2019. She has received many other awards for her photography as well.
Davidson is currently working on her photo book covering Los Angeles gang violence and gun violence in the U.S.
